Sprinkler Systems

Automatic sprinkler systems have a bad reputation for wasting water and in many cases this is unfortunately true. However, a properly designed, maintained and monitored sprinkler system will actually save water.

There are three basic types of sprinkler systems suitable for home gardens and lawns:

  1. Impact sprinklers and pulsating sprinklers are great for big watering jobs like large areas of lawn.
  2. Oscillating sprinklers, revolving and rotor sprinklers are best for smaller areas of lawn and large garden beds.
  3. Stationery sprinklers and spray heads are perfect for gently irrigating small areas of garden beds or even specific plants which require special attention.

There is also the option of a drip irrigation system. Drip systems are rapidly gaining in popularity because they are so effective and conserve water. Drip irrigation systems were originally designed for the desert southwest climates where conserving water is a top priority. A drip system works well in gardens and beds by soaking plant roots slowly and steadily by a specifically designed hose which is permeated with hundreds of tiny holes. Plants absorb water very effectively through their roots. Utilizing this method frees you from worrying about water being lost through evaporation or runoff as you would with a conventional garden irrigation system.

Boyd and Son offers the latest designs in irrigation and sprinkler systems that utilize rain and freezing sensors technologies to ensure you have an irrigation sprinkler system that optimizes water conservation, is effortless to utilize and saves you time to do the things that are important to you. We will assess your needs and work with you to provide you with the best choice for your lawn and landscape. We will plan and install the sprinkler system that is uniquely designed for your lawn and landscape. Irrigation sprinkler controllers and timers have made huge advances in the past 8-10 years. Sprinkler controls can now "sense" the environment and determine how much water, if any, is necessary to keep your landscape looking its best. Controllers now contain sensors that determine if it's raining or if it's below freezing in order to avoid creating a hazardous condition for pedestrians or vehicles generated by a sprinkler system that can't detect freezing temperatures. Boyd and Son is knowledgeable in all aspects of irrigation sprinkler systems and will assess your needs and budget to offer you the best solution possible for your unique circumstances. We build our business on honesty, integrity and customer satisfaction. You can be assured the owner will oversee your project and ensure your satisfaction. Design Services

Irrigation and sprinkler system designs are arranged to accommodate the needs and budget of the home owner or business owner. Many factors must be taken into consideration when designing your irrigation system such as your gardening and lawn maintenance routine. It should be designed to suit the layout of your garden, your soil type, climate, plant types and type of lawn you have. Other factors include: the size of your property size, your vision and your budget limitations before designing an irrigation and sprinkler system unique to your needs. There are a variety of irrigation and sprinkler controllers, various types of irrigation pipe, valves, various designs/functionality of sprinkler heads and the layout of the design to be considered in the planning process. Boyd and Son will discuss every detail and option with you before designing your irrigation sprinkler system that best suits your needs.

A number of different types of irrigation pipe are now on the market, each with its specific uses and advantages. Boyd and Son will help you decide which type of pipe is correct for your application needs. There are three primary types of pipe that are strong, readily available and economical:

Polyethylene Tubing is referred to as poly pipe, is black and flexible for irrigation. The piping ranges in diameter from 1/4 inch to 2 inches. The flexibility of this type of pipe allows it to be mechanically pulled through the soil and enables it to be wrapped around curves very easily. The downside is that the wall strength of the pipe is not as significant as other pipe materials.

Swing Pipe is also made of polyethylene, but has a much thicker wall to provide greater strength. This piping is used primarily to connect sprinkler heads to main lines of either poly pipe or PVC. The flexibility and strength of swing pipe will help prevent breakage of the main line, in the event that a sprinkler head is inadvertently run over. It also allows the installer to position the sprinkler better during installation.

PVC Pipe is a lightweight form of tubing made from polyvinyl chloride, or PVC. PVC is widely available. There are various grades or "schedules" available. Schedule 40 is the most commonly used form of PVC pipe for irrigation and is utilized in both residential and commercial applications. There are a wide variety of fittings, including elbows, connectors, reducers and angles are also available and are necessary to plumb a system, as PVC pipe is fairly rigid. For piping larger than 2 inches, CL 200 PVC is often used. PVC piping is assembled using solvent glue and slip or threaded fittings.

Irrigation controllers can range from basic manual controls to a computer based controller that monitors conditions, length of watering, water pressure and how much water for the various zones of your landscaping. If you have a fairly significant sized yard, you will require a sprinkler system with multiple stations (zones) to water all your plants and grass thoroughly. You will not be able water all stations simultaneously due to water pressure issues, so it's necessary for the stations to separate the timing for you. Over the years, it's obvious that backyards are getting smaller and smaller every year. For landscapes that are smaller, Many landscapes in our area less than 7,000 square foot. Homeowners who fall into this category won't need an irrigation controller that operates more than 6 stations. An ESP (Extra Simple Programming) controller is the perfect addition to an irrigation or sprinkler system with a smaller sized landscape. The LCD display is easy to read and understand. Just turn the dial to your desired setting - run, manual start, water budget, program start times, etc. The water saving features is what owners really like about this type of timer and there is no need to worry about over watering your lawn, plants, or trees.

Irrigation valves are available in a variety of styles and functions such as well. The "emergency valve" is installed and the closest source of water. Without this valve, you would need to shut off the water for your entire residence or commercial business in order to repair or maintenance your irrigation system. The types of emergency cut-off valves are: "gate" valves, "ball" valves, "disk" valves or "butterfly" valves. Irrigation valves turn the sprinkler heads on and off. They also can be utilized for drip systems. They are also referred to as sprinkler valves and lawn valves. The "globe" or "angle" valve is usually installed underground and is commonly used on commercial or larger-sized sprinkler systems. The "anti-siphon" valve prevents backflow. This valve must be installed above the ground at least 6 inches than the highest sprinkler head. The "solenoid" valve are electronically powered, operating on 24 volt alternating current and is manipulated by a timer. Give us a call or contact us via the "Contact Us" page for a free estimate!

Sprinkler heads come in a variety of types and sizes. Most lawns and landscapes require a 0.5" or 0.75" lawn sprinkler heads that pop up at 2.0", 3.0" or 4.0". An irrigation sprinkler's height is actually determined by how high it pops up, not by the length of the sprinkler's casing. Boyd and Son will determine your landscape irrigation needs and select from a variety of rotor sprinklers, spray head sprinklers and impact sprinklers to ensure the investment you have made on your lawn meets your expectation by keeping your lawn and plant beds looking lush and beautiful. Drip systems used to be popular only in the desert southwest, but not anymore. Drip systems are rapidly gaining in popularity because they are so effective and conserve water. A drip system works well in gardens and plant or flower beds since a slow and steady soaking by plant roots is an optimal condition for plants to thrive. Drip system hoses have hundreds of tiny holes to allow the water to drip methodically and intentionally to a specific plant or flower root. Plants absorb water very effectively through their roots. Utilizing this method frees you from worrying about water being lost through evaporation or runoff as you would with a conventional garden irrigation system. Lawn sprinkler timers and controls have come a long way since they became available for consumers. Until approximately 15 years ago, mechanical controllers were the norm. Since then, irrigation controllers have transformed into complex computer-based, digital systems that have all but made the mechanical controllers obsolete. Sprinkler irrigation system timers and controls are the "brain" of your irrigation system. It tells the valves or zones when to turn on and for how long they are to run. In order to meet city or regional regulatory demands (and city or homeowner association's fines), controllers can do so much more than "time" your water application. State-of-the-art irrigation controllers can determine how much, how long and the amount of water pressure your lawn or landscape requires. Irrigation controllers now contain sensors to ensure water efficiency by determining the amount of water needed to properly irrigate your landscape according to environmental conditions. Controllers are also quipped to determine other types of environmental changes such as freezing temperatures or even if it's raining. Boyd and Son keeps informed of this technology and city standards. We will assess your needs and install or replace your irrigation controller as required. We base our standards on integrity and excellent customer service. Please contact us for a free estimate!
